Here I am, posting on a Saturday! Unusual, but not that strange, if you consider the fact that my weekend started yesterday. I got to sleep in, which was thoroughly enjoyable. I also managed to get a few things done, like picking up my last round of orchestra music and knitting a bit at the masterclass I attended (Nadja Sonnenberg is a very cool lady violinist, quite the character). The only thing that distinguishes the weekend from the weekday here is the time of orchestra. Instead of 9am-12pm, it's at 1 or 2pm until 4 or 5pm. I'm a morning person, so I actually prefer the weekdays, weirdly. Players get a day of break after their concerts, but never enough to lose that wicked edge that playing in an orchestra daily seems to hone.

Our new music is interesting. We're doing selections from "The 3-cornered hat" by De Falla, Strauss' "Till Eulenspiegel", and two of the concerto competition winners (Sibelius violin concerto, movement 1, and "Totentantz" by Liszt). It's half hard, half easy. Goodness knows what everything's going to sound like. Both the student orchestras will be playing on Thursday and Friday night (another half and half bit of business).

Right now I quite tired. I'm considering going to the faculty orchestra's concert tonight. The star is the lovely lady I mentioned above. Before I leave, I present one of my favorite things about this place:

Squirrels in trashcans. They startle and they amuse!

Okay, I'm done.

I am now at one with EMF. I realize that sounds incredibly odd, but during every event I attend there is this point of utter understanding, where I know where I should go, what I should do, and who I want to be with. That point is apparently now. To juxtapose that slightly silly statement, here's a visual joke, don't worry if you don't get it, it is juvenile.

Signs at EMF:

I was in a very punchy mood the day I noticed these things.

Anyhow, things are going well. I've been playing my requisite 5 hours of violin a day, and practicing, too. It's rather nice to be able to focus on just one subject. It's all music, all the time.

Not much new stuff...well, actually, I did start the baby thing over the weekend. Do you want a photo? (Your opinion doesn't, in fact, matter, you're getting a photo).

Behold!

Isn't it pretty? I love the color, myself, though it's slightly more purple in real life. It's on top of my new laptop, by the way (not a lot of backdrop options here). See the little holes near the bottom of the knitting? Those are for drawstrings. The pattern suggests a zipper, but my lovely cousin requested a drawstring. If there is a zipper later the holes are so close to the bottom of the thing that there's no danger of caught toes, I think.

In case you're curious, I'm going by this pattern. I do believe that the adorable Cassie is a Taurus, so that will be taken into consideration upon finishing it up.

In mundane news, me and Denielle went to Tai Chi Sunday night. It was very relaxing, but was hard on the back. I went to a concert all on my own (via the school) yesterday night. We got back incredibly late due to driver confusion. Still, I'm not that tired today. According to the main conductor, Jose Luis, the hard part (besides practicing and injuries) is sustaining energy over the five week period. Consequently, I am trying to be very good about going to bed on time. Tonight I went to a Music as Business class, it was very informative. I definitely like the teacher, Karen, she seems very efficient and friendly, which are not two traits you find together often.

Our next concert is on Thursday, and my orchestra is playing Beethoven's 5th Symphony (the famous one), which I've played before at school, and Mahler's 2nd Symphony, 1st movement, which is both fun and challenging.

And...that's all, folks.

Alright, how do I go about this? Two main impressions: Everything on campus is brick.
The sidewalks

The buildings

And even the ditches

(Oh, I figured out how to post pictures!)
Also, the trees are huge, comparatively. In Oklahoma, we're lucky to get thirty-five feet tall anything. Here, on the other hand, everything seems to grow ridiculously high:
The oaks

The pines

The magnolias (dear goodness, the magnolias)

At least the lamp posts are normal size, yeah?

I'm slowly getting used to the whole "all music, all the time" atmosphere. Apparently, my subconscious is way ahead of the rest of me in that department because I dreamed up a melody last night while trying to go to bed. There was this lady who was complaining to a man, and as her voice went higher it turned into music, and I couldn't help but write it down. I'm calling it The Lament or Complaint, haven't decided yet. I played it on my violin today, and figured out a harmony to the last half. I don't know what I'm going to do with it overall, but I want it to blossom and grow into a real song. Ever since I took Music Theory I've been interested in composition, but I'm not a big self-starter most of the time. Having a melody come to me in my sleep is quite welcome.

Besides taking photos, I've been hanging out a good bit with the people who live in my hall. As in Vienna (but this is way better), I'm working really hard at remembering names. We have Natalie, Rachel, Robin, and Kaila (say kyla). There is also Yi-Fang (say e-fon), the oldest of the students here (22 years and older than Natalie by a month) whom I met yesterday. A good few of the students here are from Asia, which makes a certain amount of sense. I'm quite interested in the cultural diversity around me. Sometimes I feel a bit racist for even noticing the differences, but that doesn't make sense. I cannot help but see that a person has a different ethnicity, nor can I completely forget the stereotypes that are so very embedded in our culture, but I can decide to treat every person as a person. And that is what I do.

Now, I need to go and get a cold pack from the nurse.  My left thumb joint is not taking kindly to being used after I took such a long break. It doesn't hurt horribly, but preventative medicine is the best thing for it.

Until next time,

I have been informed that people cannot find my pictures. So here is the link: http://pics.livejournal.com/deepgreen18/gallery/00001k8x
Hopefully this works.

In other news, my 21st birthday was yesterday. There is much gasping and "Oh, really?"'s on your side of the screen, I'm sure. It was pleasant and fairly uneventful. We went to church, Olive Garden for lunch, and had ice cream cake in the evening. If you are wondering, and I'm sure you are (everyone and their brother has asked): No, I did not have alcohol on this most auspicious and traditional of days. I had a virgin pina coloda. This is my twisted sense of humor at work, and it makes me original in my own way. It was very good.

Warning, a small rant against drinking is ahead.
Can someone tell me what the point of alcohol is? If it's to relieve stress, I feel that I have better, less poisonous ways to destress. If it is for social occasions, why should I have it with my family around?
I don't like how it tastes or smells. It makes me feel woozy, and I hate being out of control. They say being tired is worse for your motor control and judgement than drinking, and I despise how slow I get when I'm tired.

And that, my friends, is why I will likely only drink to excess once, and maybe not even that.

I think I'm in a slightly less happy mood than I thought. I shall go now and think about random things, like Victoria's top. I've been swatching for it, and am hoping for a better result than the last top I made. Also, I can't start it until the 8th (darn Ravelympics), so I have to find something else to occupy me for the next three days. There is also Robin Hood. My lovely younger brother was kind enough to keep the episodes taped for me while I was away, and I watched most of them last night. "Most of them" because he accidentally deleted the next to last one. Frustrating, that. I am currently waiting for paypal to receive a few dollars so itunes will be paid when I get the episode because itunes doesn't like my billing address! It is a bit frustrating, as I said. Makes me wonder about the relaxing properties of alcohol, actually.

There we go, I just smiled at my own wit. I'm off to the dermatologist, now. Here's hoping for clearer skin once again.
