Something to Talk About
Oct. 20th, 2008 09:03 pmI just started a new knitting project. What is it, you ask? Fingerless gloves, made from (drumroll, please) yarn my older sis gave me two(?) years ago...have I really been doing yarn-related things this long?
This yarn, which completely mystified me at first, now is much appreciated, a lot. It's 60% wool, 40% nylon. This means it's good for warmth (wool=warm) and sturdy enough to wear as a garment (nylon is tough). The colorway it is in (meaning its color and how many ever shades it has) is so light! Kind of a pearlescent shade of green with flecks (literally) of pink, orange, darker green, and white thrown in. After using suede yarn for the past three weeks, this stuff is a dream. The stitch definition! (how well stitches show up when the fabric is knitted or crocheted). The stretchiness! (Wool is well known for its stretchy quality). And the color! Can't get over that. It's soft, too. My sis wouldn't have it any other way. :)
So yes, basking in a new project. Must go practice and read. Tomorrow...the dentist! (3rd time in three weeks, don't ask.) Work, and band rehearsal. By the way, in case people who care are reading, my band has a gig on Halloween at a biker bar. For some reason, I get real nervous just telling people about it. Oh well.
Off we go! Into the wild blue yonder. (Are those the words?)

Yarn, on the lack or abundance of it
Aug. 16th, 2008 03:44 pmYesterday was rather adventurous. I played by myself at a wedding (it went extremely well, and the ice cream cake was divine), and then had to fix an interesting mistake in my sister's Ravelympic top. I had switched two stitches and didn't notice until I was six rows past it. Unfortunately, the fixing involved yarn overs, which I had never dealt with before. I tried to fix it by unraveling just the two stitches in question and laddering them back up, but got very frustrated because it just didn't make sense. So, I did something else for a few hours, and a thought occurred to me: What if I compare this mess to the next repeat? I very carefully unraveled the same two stitches of a correct repeat, and what do you know? My mistake had impacted more than just those two stitches that had me angry. In the end (and this is brilliance of the highest order) I unraveled all the stitches impacted and re-knit them using double pointed needles. If I had been rash and frogged all six rows I would have been a) demoralized and b) set back by a whole day's worth of knitting. With this solution I am happy, amazed at my own genius, and I still have 54 rows. This counts, I have a deadline.
I shall go now. My roomie's back in town! We are going to dinner and a movie, I love my life.
